Summary:
Real Friends follows the story of a girl named Shannon. Shannon has been best friends with Adrienne for a very long time but when Adrienne starts hanging out with Jen, the most popular girl in class, their relationship starts to change. Jen is also the leader of a friendship circle called The Group. People in the group will do whatever it takes to be Jen’s favorite. Shannon wonders if she and Adrienne will remain friends and if she is part of The Group or not. 

Target Audience: 
The target audience for this book is children ages 8 to 12. Children who enjoy graphic novels or who have experience with bullying will relate to this novel. 

Evaluation:
This is a very good read for children that is based on the author’s own experiences. The conflicts are very realistic and many children experience similar issues in middle school. This book covers important topics including friendship and bullying. 

Reader Response Activity:
Readers can choose an important theme from the book and draw their own comic strip relating to the theme. This will help readers connect to the book’s themes and to graphic novels.
