Tyrone the Horrible by Hans Wilhelm

APA Information: Wilhelm, Hans. Tyrone the Horrible. Scholastic Inc., 1988.

Genre: Fiction

Reading Level: 560L

Summary:
Boland is a little dinosaur who has a problem with a big bully, Tyrone. Tyrone is constantly bullying Boland and throughout the book, Boland is trying to stop Tyrone. Boland asks his friends for advice and tries many different ways to stop his bully. At the end of the book, Boland is finally able to stop Tyrone from bullying him.

Target Audience:
The targeted audience is children in grades first through fourth. Children who have experience with bullying will highly relate to this book. I would definitely recommend children to read this book as a way to introduce them to what bullying is.

Evaluation:
This book is a bit on the older side but I still think it is a great read. The problems that Boland faces are not super unrealistic and most of his solutions are believable. Wilhelm does a great job representing diverse physical characteristics by using different types of dinosaurs. This book covers a very important issue in the real world, bullying. I would recommend teachers to read this book to their students.

Reader Response Activity:
Readers can create a feelings chart by drawing pictures of Boland that represent how his feelings change throughout the book (how does he feel when being bullied, trying to stop the bully, not being bullied anymore).
