Summary:
Blue is a quiet color who gets picked on by Red. Yellow, Orange, Green, and Purple do not say anything to Red. Red continues to pick on all the colors until One shows up. One shows all the colors how to stand up to Red and how to count.
Target Audience:
The target audience for this book is children ages one and older. Any child who likes to learn about colors or counting will love this book. Children who have experience with bullying will also be able to relate to this book.
Evaluation:
I think this is a great story. The characters and situations in the book are very believable. The characters overcome the problem, but not too easily. Otoshi does a great job addressing diversity in One by using different colors and shapes of numbers. The book also deals with bullying by describing how Red treats characters based on their differences.
Reader Response Activity:
Readers can write about how the story would be different if One never stood up to Red. (Would Red still be bullying the other colors? Would someone else have stood up to Red?)
