Summary:
El Deafois about a girl named Cece who lost her hearing at a very young age. Cece uses a hearing aid device called the Phonic Ear. She is self-conscious about this device and tries to hide it from people at school. Cece’s disability makes her feel lonely and different from her classmates. Throughout the book, Cece tries to fit in and make new friends. 

Target Audience: 
The target audience for El Deafois children in grades four and up. Any child that likes to read graphic novels will most likely enjoy this book. El Deafo will be relatable to many readers. For example, children who feel like they do not fit in will relate to this book. 

Evaluation:
I would definitely recommend El Deafo. The storyline is very believable and is based on the author’s life. The characters in the book seem very real and relatable. El Deafohas a great message about disabilities, fitting in, and self-discovery. 

Reader Response Activity:
Students can write a compliment to each of their classmates. Each classmate will have a paper bag on their desk and students will drop compliments into the corresponding student’s bag. At the end of the activity, each student will have a bag containing a compliment from every classmate.
