Summary:
This book is about a boy named Percy Jackson. Percy struggles to fit in and discovers he is a demi-god. His mother is a typical human but his father is Poseidon. Percy has to go live at Camp Half-Blood because its protective barrier keeps Percy safe from creatures of the underworld. Percy’s mother is taken by one of these creatures on their way to the camp. In other news, someone has stolen Zeus’ lightning bolt. The book follows Percy and two other half-bloods on their journey to find the lightning bolt and save Percy’s mother.
Target Audience:
The target audience for this book is children in middle school and up. Readers who are interested in Geek mythology will love this book.
Evaluation:
This is one of my favorite books! The story line is very engaging. The problems the characters face are realistic in terms of Greek mythology. Readers will fall in love with Percy Jackson and will look forward to reading the entire series.
Reader Response Activity:
Have students watch the movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and have them compare the movie and book. What did the movie change? Were important scenes left out of the movie? Why do you think these changes were made?
