This novel is about two sisters, Soledad and Ming, who move from the Philippines to Louisiana after their mother dies and their father remarries. Sol and Ming’s father abandons them, and they are left living with their evil step-mother, Vea. Vea can be seen as both a verbal and physical bully throughout the novel. Sol and Ming must use their imagination to escape Vea and reality.
Target Audience:
This novel is aimed towards children ages 10 and up. Readers who enjoy storytelling are likely to enjoy this novel because Sol and Ming often use their imagination to create stories. Readers who are close to their siblings will relate to The Land of Forgotten Girls because Sol and Ming have a great sibling connection. This novel also deals with bullying and difficult family situations which can be relatable for some readers.
Evaluation:
The Land of Forgotten Girls is a great story because it is relatable. Many people go through hard times and try to find ways to escape. Erin Entrada Kelly does a great job at portraying the characters as individuals. She also does an amazing job at accurately depicting the issues that the characters face. Entrada Kelly makes the story believable. The Land of Forgotten Girls keeps the reader’s attention throughout the entire novel and I would definitely recommend this book.
Reader Response Activity:
A reader response activity I would use for The Land of Forgotten Girls would be creating a concrete found poem. Students will first pick something from the novel to represent and then find quotes in the novel relating to what they chose. Then they will arrange the quotes on paper to form a picture. This allows students to be creative just like Sol and Ming.
